Penetration, 2012
Graphite on paper, mixed material frames, white enamel paint Various dimensions; After researching rape cases around the world and finding alarmingly high statistics in places like China and India, I decided to focus my attention on my own country. In comparison, rape is not as common (though reported more frequently), but is absolutely an issue. I found five specific cases and using the details of the story, matched them up to different images of penetration: candles into a cake, a knife into bread, a carrot in the soil, a nail into a crumbling wall, and a post into the ground. The word “penetration” can mean many different things: it can mean exactly what the images are displaying, but can also mean something violent, and in the cases of rape, psychologically and physically damaging.

My Ten Neighbors
Graphite on paper 8.5 in x 14 in; I used images of women from different parts of the world in an effort to show how there are many different types within the gender; they are categorized by age, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, etc. I was not so focused on the fact that they were females but that they were individuals with their own identities.
